Public warned about fake PM Facebook account
2016-02-12Staff Report 2 Windhoek The Office of the Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila has distanced her from fake Facebook accounts falsely opened in her name. “I would like to alert the public of a scam whereby some unknown individual/ individuals have set up fake Facebook pages in the name of Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila,” the prime minister’s spokeswoman, Saima Shaanika, said in a statement issued yesterday. She said currently there are four Facebook accounts in the name of the prime minister of which three are fake. “In fact the prime minister only has one account which was opened in 2013 but she hasn’t used it ever since,” she said. Shaanika urged members of the public to remain alert and when in doubt of certain representations which involve the name of the prime minister to verify such information by contacting the office. According to Shaanika the fake Facebook accounts are attempting to convince the public that they are personally run by Kuugongelwa-Amadhila. “They are sending out messages claiming that Kuugongelwa-Amadhila is involved in some business transactions and inviting those interested in such unnamed transactions to contact the office,” she said. She warned the public that such messages or emails claiming to come from the prime minister are fraudulent and aimed at swindling the public of its hard-earned money. “The prime minister is not involved in any business transactions and any correspondence or announcement about such claims are not sent or authorised by the prime minister,” she said. She further advises the public to be aware of fraudulent misrepresentations on social media as well as individuals who ‘name-drop the involvement of the prime minister in transactions the prime minister has no knowledge of. Criminals who have masqueraded as prominent politicians have in the past defrauded huge amounts of money from unsuspecting members of the public. 2016-02-12Staff Report 2
