Rangers gun down elephant cow
Khorixas An elephant cow was shot dead nearby Fransfontein settlement on Sunday by rangers from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET). Kunene Region’s chief warden Gerson Somaeb confirmed he gave instructions to his officials to kill the cow last week but he refused to give further details. “I don’t want to talk with the media. Don’t ask me questions. I gave them the instructions to kill the injured elephant,” Somaeb said. Kevin !Nowaseb, the chief warden for Kunene South said he was on leave and instructed this journalist to contact Samuel James another official from the MET at the Khorixas office. James however said they were instructed not to speak to the media as they were busy writing a report on the elephant cow. The officials also refused to give details of how the elephant cow was injured. A Swartbooi Traditional Authority employee said the meat was divided amongst the Fransfontein community early this week. “People were receiving meat but not all of us eat elephant meat. But the lines were long for those who waited to receive the meat,” said the employee of the Swartbooi Traditional Authority. Khorixas station commander Hiskia Nuuyoma said he was unaware of the injured elephant cow.
