Reckless drivers unwelcome at coast
WALVIS BAY - The Erongo Regional Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua has appealed to all visitors and coastal residents to be extra vigilant when travelling to the coast this festive season. Mutjavikua made the call last week in Swakopmund in view of the high number of international tourists and Namibians that will be flocking to the coastal towns of Swakopmund, Henties Bay and Walvis Bay to celebrate the festive season. Mutjavikua specifically referred to the road between Karibib and Swakopmund, which is considered a high-risk accident zone. Mutjavikua urged motorist to stick to the required speed limit and adhere to all rules and regulations when travelling. “Consider the next driver on the road and refrain from drunk driving. We all know that especially the road from Karibib to Walvis Bay faces traffic congestion, especially during the festive season, as many foreign and local visitors flock to the coast for the holidays. “Therefore I would like to urge all motorists to drive cautiously and avoid any avoidable accidents on our roads,” the governor said. At the same time the Namibian Police Chief for Erongo Region, Commissioner Samuel //Hoebeb also sent out a stern warning to road users and visitors. He said Nampol Traffic in conjunction with all municipal traffic departments in the region will be fully visible to ensure safety of all residents and road users. “Roadblocks have already been set up throughout the region and patrols will also be conducted randomly at various towns, especially Swakopmund and Walvis Bay as we expect an increase in the number of visitors this festive season again. “Therefore I would like to urge all drivers to refrain from drunk driving, reckless driving as well as speeding as the law will deal with you, if you disregard any rules and regulations and endanger anyone’s life on our roads,” he said. “Be warned that my officers will be ready to arrest any offender,” said the commissioner.
