Reflections on 2007 Junior Secondary Certificate Examination Balance Sheet
2008-01-18Staff Report 2 By Nahas A Angula Education Improvement Pointers On December 21, 2007, the Directorate of National Examinations and Assessment of the Ministry of Education released the results of the full-time candidates who sat for the Junior Secondary Certificate Examination. The performance of part-time candidates in the 2007 Junior Secondary Certificate Examinations was also made available on the same date. Results for the first group of students to sit for Grade 12 Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate (NSS) Higher Level were also released at the same time. These three groups of examination candidates provide meaningful pointers to whether our educational provision is improving or not. I would like to reflect on some pertinent issues which should inform education planners on the way forward. I shall focus on two educational dimensions: quantity and quality. Quantity The total number of schools offering Junior Secondary Certificate (JSC) examinations in 2007 was 534. The number of schools countrywide offering Grade 10 increased in 2007 by 24 schools. The increase in schools offering Grade 10 enabled 468 additional candidates to sit for the Junior Secondary Certificate Examination in 2007 as compared to 2006. This was 1.5 percent increase in the number of candidates for JSC. This was an improvement in access to learning.
