2015-06-26Staff Report 2 WINDHOEK Rehearsals for the second theatre festival play of Committed Artists of Namibia (CAN) are now well underway to get the American play, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, ready for the August-run of the classic stage work by American playwright Dale Wasserman. This play is staged as part of the 36th annual theatre festival of CAN since two years ago focusing and concentrating on staging world classic plays from all six continents for the benefit of starving Namibian audiences. CAN, the longest surviving community theatre group established in 1979,staged the first American play, Agnes of God in May as part of this year’s festival to great media acclaim and standing ovations in the Ultimate Theatre in Khomasdal. True to it’s publicly declared policy, CAN is once again taking the lead in casting new faces in the cast of ten actors in this play to help develop the Namibian theatre industry on a consistent basis. Talented actor, David Campbell, has been cast in the role of Randle McMurphy, a part that has made American actor, Jack Nicholson, a world super star through the film version of this knockout play. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest deals with the trials and tribulations of mentally sick male patients in an asylum, controlled by a no-nonsense ward sister and the stringent rules and regulations of such a state-run institution for the mentally disturbed in society. CAN’s artistic director and resident playwright, Frederick Philander, adapted this captivating play for Namibian consumption. The sponsors of the CAN-festival are: The First National Bank Foundation, Khomasdal Spare Parts, Ricoh Namibia and Khomasdal Service Station. The play will be performed on Thursday 27, Friday 28 and Saturday 29 Augusts in the Hall of the Eldorado Secondary School in Khomasdal.
