Retired Brave Gladiator Elina Petrus off to Germany
2016-04-13Staff Report 2 Windhoek Good organisation, financing, carefully defined marketing of sports events and human resource management are some of the crucial pillars for the growth and success of sports in any country. As part of the foreign cultural and educational policy of the German Foreign Office, the Sports Faculty of the University of Leipzig is offering a four-month course in sports management for sports experts from developing countries. Two Namibians in the shape of Victoria Katukula, sports officer in the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Services and Andrew Masongo, president of the Namibian Basketball Federation, successfully completed the course at the end of January. Four months later, another Namibian sports officer will become a chief beneficiary of the project by having been given the chance to study sports management in Leipzig. By invitation from the Federal Foreign Office, former Brave Gladiator footballer Elina Petrus has been chosen to enroll in the four-month-course. An exited Petrus hopes her studies will contribute to the development of local sports in order to make it competitive on international level in the long term. “As regional sports officer for the Karas Region, I want to learn from the German experts and their experiences.” Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Namibia Christian Schlaga said it is important to fully develop the potential that Namibia has in the area of sport. In order to achieve this, it is crucial to support experts in the field of sports management outside Windhoek as well. “We are thus very pleased that with madam Petrus, a regional sports officer from the Karas Region is able to take part in the course,” he said. 2016-04-13Staff Report 2
