Revered Anti-apartheid Writer on First Visit
2008-03-20Staff Report 2 "By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK Controversial and internationally renowned South African Afrikaans anti-apartheid novelist and playwright, Andre P Brink, arrives in the capital at the end of this month for a series of public lectures on his novels spanning a period of 30 years in writing. Brink, as one of the so-called Verligte (Enlightened) writers in the 70s and 80s shook the ruling Afrikaner establishment with many of his writings. He is head of the English Department at the University of Cape Town. Him and his wife Karina, an academic in her own right, are the guests of a local Afrikaans writer's organisation, Krit. The writer of works such as Kennis van die Aand, Houdenbek and A Dry White Season, which later was transformed into an international film, will be in Namibia on a first visit. Recently Krit invited South African female writer, Antjie Krog, for a series of talks on her works. ""We in Krit try our best to stimulate interest in contemporary literature by at least inviting one writer per year to share their writing experiences with the academic community in Namibia,"" said Emma Kirchner a committee member of the Namibian writers' forum. Brink's programme caters for a public lecture on his novels on March 31 at the Windhoek College of Education in Khomasdal. On the third day the maverick writer, also known for his stage play The Jogger, will be hosted in a one-on-one public discussion on How does history become literature at the Warehouse Theatre with Namibian academic and visual artist Andre du Pissani. Admission to the event is N$100. Avid Brink readers will have the chance to meet the author in person and get their books signed at the Book Den on the last day of his visit. Prolific in both English and Afrikaans writing, Brink's latest Afrikaans novel, Ander Lewens, will also be launched on the same evening in front of Woolworths on the upper level of the Wernhill Shopping Centre. Brink, considered an Afrikaner wine expert, is also scheduled to give an informal talk on wine at the Wine Bar in the capital during his visit. Karina Brink will deliver a public lecture at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Namibia on the works of South African Nobel Laureate, Nadine Gordimer's writing since 1994. The lecture is titled After the Birth: Nadine Gordimer's Writing since 1994. Brink's readers and admirers, Namibian writers, would-be writers and the public are invited to attend the lectures, book launch and appearances of the respected writer over the four-day period this intellectual will be in the capital.
