Rundu circuit hamstrung by teacher shortage

RUNDU – The director of education in Kavango East, Fanuel Kapapero, said apart from overcrowded classrooms and shortage of furniture, the Rundu circuit is still faced with a critical shortage of teachers.

The director told New Era the education directorate has been burning the midnight oil, trying to ensure prompt recruitment to ensure smooth learning in the first semester despite challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Kapapero, the directorate currently has more than 140 new vacant posts that are yet to be filled in the entire Kavango East region.
“This has always been the usual challenge, especially in Rundu circuit. However, the advert has gone out and teachers are going to be recruited.
“There are more than 140 posts at different levels, but the majority are junior primary posts,” Kapapero said.
“I know due to the population growth, this shortage might not be entirely addressed but we are trying to address it; we really need qualified teachers.”

Rundu circuit has about 39 schools in total and they are mostly junior and primary schools. The circuit has schools in the Rundu Urban constituency as well as in Rundu Rural.
