Rundu launches anti-littering campaign
Rundu In pursuit of a clean and healthy town, the Mayor of Rundu, Verna Sinimbo, has launched an awareness campaign to help educate Rundu residents to stop littering, which has been a nagging headache for the town. “Please put bottles and litter in the bin; under the bush, it is a sin,” Sinimbo, who was this week re-elected for another year in office, implored residents of the town that has experienced rapid growth. Rundu has been reported in the media to be very dirty, with heaps of litter seen at street corners and open spaces in town and that is what the mayor wants to change. She wants to instil a sense of ownership in the residents to change their mindsets, as this campaign hopes to raise awareness on preserving the environment, through messages printed on stickers to remind people to dispose of their litter in a more appropriate and responsible manner. Earlier in July, Sinimbo took the mandate to start a ‘Keep Rundu Clean’ campaign, and on Monday, just after she was re-elected as mayor, she announced the launch of another chapter of that campaign in partnership with businesswoman, Karin Fudge of Kavango Pharmacy. “My dream is that we turn Rundu into a green and clean city to complement its natural beauty and resources. Let us make cleanliness our culture,” the mayor said. Sinimbo said, in her tenure thus far as mayor, one of the issues that has greatly disturbed her and called for urgency is how to keep the town clean and rid it of the mountains of uncollected garbage. “The state of our town is a reflection of who we are as a people and therefore I believe it is time for action that we changed the image of Rundu. I plead that we ensure a clean environment because in the long run it plays a great role in making Rundu a desirable destination as well as a place to call home,” she said.
