Sailor sustains serious burns in shack-fire
2016-06-08Staff Report 2 Lüderitz A 37-year-old man who resides in the informal settlement of Area 7 at Lüderitz sustained serious injuries when the shack in which he lives caught fire over the weekend. The fire occurred on Sunday morning at around 11h30. Prior to the incident, the victim, Wilbard Shaanika, was sent home from work at the Namport docks, because he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. He works at sea as a fisherman. Shaanika sustained severe injuries and reportedly had 40-degree burns on his body. He was fortunately rescued from the flames just in time by neighbours and members of the public and was rushed to hospital where he was immediately admitted. Some of his valuable properties could, however, not be salvaged, as they were gutted by the fire. The cause of the fire is yet unknown. The victim was alone in the shack at the time of the incident. 2016-06-08Staff Report 2
