Sarie to showcase her new ceramics
Windhoek Talented Visual artist and ceramist, Sarie Maritz, is exhibiting her new ceramics to at her 10th annual solo exhibition opening today at her home gallery at 19 Barella Street in Klein Windhoek. Sarie says visitors can again enjoy the opening of her exhibition in the tranquil surroundings of her ‘pop-up’ home gallery. “Although this is not going to be my first exhibition, there will be some new ceramics for the first time since I enjoy experimenting with new ideas to ensure that each show is fresh and full of pleasant surprises,” Sarie says. Her interest in clay started at a young age, when growing up on a farm in the Bushveld of North-eastern South Africa. Sarie and one of her sister made animal figurines from the farm dam clay - oxen, sheep and horses, which they fired in a campfire. She did not think about making pots back then, but she remembers that her mother kept a Sotho earthenware pot as a water cooler by the back door. It stood in the breeze, to cool the warm borehole water for drinking, which is what inspired her to do ceramics. Her opening exhibition will consist of a variety of functional ware such as dishes, soup and tea bowls, vases and platters.
