Schools rugby gets N$140 000 sponsorship boost
Windhoek Momentum Namibia yesterday once again reaffirmed its commitment towards the development of schools rugby when it sponsored the Namibia Schools Sports Union (NSSU) with N$140 000 to host the 23rd edition of the Momentum Secondary Schools Rugby League. Speaking at the launch in the capital yesterday, National Coordinator of NSSU Solly Duiker thanked Momentum for its unwavering contribution towards the development of sport at school level. Duiker added that Momentum’s involvement in other schools development initiatives, such as schools cricket and hockey leagues, testifies their ongoing effort to develop and unearth raw talent at grassroots level, particularly at schools. Teams participating in the league will compete in various age groups, that is, U/14A, U/14B, U/15A, U/15B, U/19D, U/19C, U/19B, U/19A and U/19 Super. Only 54 schools from eight regions would be taking part in the league. The regions are Erongo, Hardap, //Kharas, Khomas, Kunene, Omaheke, Oshikoto and Otjozondjupa. The league starts this weekend and ends on August 15. Momentum’s Head of Myriad and Funds Frederick van Zyl, said the company’s brand philosophy extends beyond the financial wellness of its targeted audience, emphasizing that it places value on making a significant contribution through sports with the aim of bringing about social and economic impact among the youth of Namibia. “The sponsorship contribution of N$140 000 to the league is aimed at showcasing talent and celebrating rugby as one of the top sport codes in Namibia. We also put special emphasis on players from rural areas of the country. This spectacular showcase of raw talent provides these young men with an opportunity to be exposed to higher levels of coaching, refereeing and the game of rugby in general,” Van Zyl added.
