Science Fair Kicks Off
"By Francis Tsawayo The Regional Science Fair kicks off this morning at the Habitat Development Centre in Katutura where over 240 students from different schools within Khomas will compete before a panel of 34 judges. Yesterday, Leena Shinavene of the Namibian Mathematics Regional Committee said the students entered into 19 different categories. Urbanus Kaihiva, Acting Senior Education Officer of the Khomas Region, is the expected guest speaker at the annual event that has received more entries compared to last year. Stressing the importance of student participation, Kaihiva said students are not only exposed to the critical side of science but that it is a value-adding experience to their theoretical understanding of science. ""I also took part in such events, I was a young scientist,"" he revealed. Judges have been chosen based on their qualifications and experience. The panel has been drawn from a pool of expertise in the pubic and private sectors. NamWater, the Polytechnic of Namibia the University of Namibia are some of the institutions that will provide judges including experienced primary and secondary school teachers. The judges are going to be looking at the quality of the collection, the scientific value of projects, and the material used. Although struggling with sponsorship, Shinavene confirmed that Plasti Print Laminating and Nashua Namibia had assisted but more was needed. The programme will begin at 08:00 with the adjudication and public viewing taking up most of the morning. The judges will work through the lunch-hour and after that the students will dismantle their projects for the rest of the afternoon with the prize -giving ceremony only beginning after 18:00 hours. The 19 categories at stake are Eco-Tourism, Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, Human Science, Communication, Astronomy, Engineering, Water, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Marine Science, Architecture, Medical Science, and Mineral Science (Geology)."
