Four shacks gutted by fire in Lüderitz
Lüderitz Four shacks in Amilema informal settlement in Lüderitz burned down on Sunday. Eyewitnesses said the fire was caused by a 4-year-old child who was playing with matches with her three siblings in one of the shacks. The children’s mother was at work at the time, New Era was informed. Neighbours were able to rescue the kids and no one was injured. The wind was blowing strongly at the southern coastal town on the day of the incident, causing the fire to spread easily to the surrounding shacks. The fire brigade battled to extinguish the blaze as they could not get too close because of the heat. There are no roads or big spaces between the shacks and water points are a bit far. People were unable to rescue much of their property. Resident Timoteus Hambiya, whose wife was attending church, said he did not make it to rescue his property as he first had to make sure his kids were safe. When he looked the fire had engulfed all his earthly belongings. Some of the affected residents work at the fish factories in the town.
