Six Hurt in Concert Stampede
By Kuvee Kangueehi Windhoek At least six people were seriously injured on Saturday evening during a stampede at a music concert organised by the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) Herero Radio. The incident took place at around 21h00 at the Khomasdal Stadium after impatient fans broke down the stadium gate and invaded the pitch. As hundreds of people stormed into the stadium to avoid paying, some people fell to the ground and were run over by other fans. Six people were rushed to the Katutura State Hospital on Saturday evening after the stampede. Three of the six were admitted while the other three were discharged. The three that were admitted are two young women and a 21-one-year-old student from the Polytechnic of Namibia. One of the victims had serious facial injuries while another woman was admitted for injuries to one eye. The Polytechnic student broke his thigh and was unable to write his examination yesterday. According to an NBC employee who was part of the organising committee and spoke on condition of anonymity, the situation got out of hand because the people who turned out were more than they expected.
