Soccer Minnows Get Big Chance
By Carlos Kambaekwa WINDHOEK The northern town of Otjiwarongo is becoming the Mecca of domestic football with the usually laid back enclave coming to life by hosting the much sought after football bonanza for teams in the lower tiers of domestic football. Sixteen teams went into the hat at Soccer House yesterday when the draw for the competition's proper round playoffs took place. Twelve regional winners with the exception of Omaheke will battle it out alongside the top two teams from both the southern and northern streams, after Omahaeke was eliminated by Kunene Region in the play-offs. The tournament which carries a total prize money of half a million dollars will be held at Otjiwarongo on the 1st and 2nd of next month, with the quarterfinals scheduled for Mariental a fortnight later. On Saturday, Try Again opens her assault in the lucrative tourney with a date against United Stars, and King Fisher square up against Young Rangers, with Free State United having a date with Blue Birds while Invincible could prove too much of a hot potato to handle for Major Power. Sunday sees Flamingo up against Deportivo Alaves while seasoned campaigners and Outjo-based Pubs who have since added Nexus Building preceding their traditional name - will by all means have their own eleven soldiers on the pitch in a bid to counter the threat posed by Eleven Brothers from Otjozondjupa Region. Hotspurs have been pitted against PC Blue Boys with old timers Rundu Chiefs completing the proceedings with a tie against Vietnam Rangers. The winner is guaranteed a whopping N$90 000 with the runner up taking home a consolation prize of N$40 000 while a cool N$20 000 is up for grabs for each of the semifinalists.
