Social issues on stage at the Theatre School on Thursday
2016-11-14Staff Report 2 Windhoek - A new play dealing with issues of love and hurt, entitled 'Just like the First Time', is to be staged at the Theatre School on Thursday. The play is written and directed by College of the Arts (COTA) third-year drama student, Bobby Kaanjosa, who is majoring in directing and scriptwriting. He says the theatre piece addresses some of timeless questions, such as who are we really? And what does the love we have for other teach us? Set in modern-day Namibia, this is a contemporary African story depicting everyday struggles faced by young couples. “It is a story of pain, betrayal, sacrifices, love, infidelity, identity, sexuality and family. It shows how far one can go for the one they love and how that could be both a curse and a blessing for all parties involved,” says Kanjoosa. Five actors: Glen-nora Tjipura, Junior Vinga, Junior Nas Shaanikah, Ndahafa Uyepe and Monica Amukoto are in the play. Kanjoosa wrote and directed the play under the mentorship of theater heavyweight David Ndjavera as part of his final year examination. He is known for his involvement in the Namibian fashion industry as a model, agent and producer of the just-concluded Mister Ideal Namibia pageant. The music for the play is directed by choral conductor Elson Hindudu and the movement is choreographed by West Uarije. “I’m personally excited, as this is one big thing for me. As a director, this is my transition from actor to director and writer. Proving that passion can break boundaries,” says Kanjosa.
