Sports commission welcomes Namibia Handball Federation

The Namibia Handball Federation (NHF) was yesterday admitted as a new federation under the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC).

The code was established earlier this year to unite Namibia through the sport.

Handball is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six out-court players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands to throw it into the goal of the other team.

A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes; the team that scores more goals wins.

The federation will be headed by interim members: Issy Nakamwe as president, Elina Mutumbulwa as vice-president, Bela Veiko as treasurer, and Sieggie Veii-Mujoro as secretary general.

Speaking at a press conference at the NSC office in Eros yesterday, Nakamwe said they are looking at expanding the code to all regions.

“We have been looking forward to establishing members in all regions, where we will also focus on growing and popularising the sport,” he said.

In this regard, they plan to host a tournament soon.

“We are looking forward to welcoming athletes to join the sports code. We are also working on getting affiliations to continental and global bodies. By doing so, it will assist us in growing at a faster pace,” he said.

Also speaking at this event, Freddy Mwiya, NSC chief, urged the members to decentralise the code and not focus only on the capital.

“You should expand and have structures in the region for the code to grow. We have giant-bodied people based within the northern regions, and this will aid in having one of the best teams in the country,” he said.

Mwiya then welcomed the federation as a new member, saying they are looking forward to working with them.
