Sports Scribes on the Spot
"By Confidence Musariri With Carlos Kambaekwa's 'Shooting From The Hip' column not available this grand weekend in Namibian football, where the curtain comes to a close, this reporter sought to use this space to reveal how sports writers have tipped Orlando Pirates to emerge victorious in this photo finish of the league: Corry Ihuhua (The Namibian): ""Pirates will win the league. No two ways about it. Judging from previous results where they have the best defensive record in the league, everything is in their favour. The fact that they are playing away makes them more motivated, despite playing a side (Mighty Gunners) that beat Black Africa last week."" Festus Nakatana (The Namibia Sun): ""Mighty Gunners have already survived the axe and I cannot really see them causing much trouble for Pirates. But in football everything is possible. Pirates have not won the league title since 1990 and cannot afford to slip up when the opportunity has presented itself. Pirates will pull through."" Arne Putensen (AZ): ""My bet is on Pirates. We should be asking ourselves who is going to come in second. They are four teams fighting for second spot and that's where the fight may be. Pirates just need a draw."" Boet Mathews (Republikein): ""Pirates should win it. Their form says it all. Twelve games in a row undefeated, they are the most consistent team in the league and they deserve it. Civics will give in because of the pressure ever since the MTC/NFA Cup final where they have played Ramblers and SKW, both tough teams."" Toivo Ndjembela (Informante): ""It's definitely Pirates. Nothing more, nothing less."" Helge Schulz (Namibia Sport): ""I can't tell you who is going to win. It's in Pirates' hands. If they don't win, then they don't deserve to be called champions. They need to win not draw to show they are worthy champions."""" John Tuerijama (Nampa): ""It's clear-cut Orlando Pirates. The goal difference makes the difference. Second position will be between Black Africa and Civics."" In an earlier informal discussion, Carlos Kambaekwa tipped Civics to torpedo Pirates on the last day of the league, before his departure for South Africa; while Kayele Kambombo of the Namibia Today continued mourning for his former team Blue Waters' exit from the top-flight league.
