Stage set for adrenaline-pumping horse racing
2016-11-18Staff Report 2 Rehoboth If you are a horse racing enthusiast and feel deprived of regular action of this equestrian sporting discipline, please don’t despair, the Rehoboth Turf Club will play host to the year-ending annual Alex Angermund Seven Stars Horse Racing Handicap tomorrow. All eyes will be fixed on newcomer and South African thoroughbred gilding Mae Tiger from the stable of Omaruru resident Kariko. The horse is fresh from a race in Kimberley earlier this week and comes into this weekend’s race as one of the favourites in the shorter sprints. Organizers have arranged a bumper programme with approximately 60 horses expected to descend on the challenging Rehoboth horse racing track outside town. “We are expecting more entries than last year and with new horses in the mix we are confident this will be an event not to be missed because competition will be tough amongst the horses and their respective riders,” says chief race organizer Ryno Angermund. Eight different races are on the mouth-watering menu with horses ready to grill each other in various categories. However, it’s in the adrenaline-pumping shorter distances, notably the 1 000 metres, where spectators could be in for a genuine spectacle. The 1 000m sprint sees another newcomer Marvin of Nipsy Angermund making his local debut and Angermund is highly confident his newly acquired gilding will hit the ground running. “Obviously the competition will be tough but we are going there to compete and not just fill the numbers,” chuckles proud owner Nipsy. Apart from hosts Rehoboth, horses from Omaruru, Windhoek and Gobabis are to gallop vigorously in the eight different categories. Meanwhile, both the popular 1 400m and 1 600m sprints have been demarcated in four different divisions. Sparks are expected to fly in the energy sapping King of the Dirt race, the 1 800m long A-division handicap sprint. The gathering will include games for children and music performances by local disc jockey ‘DJ Phillip’ from Capricorn radio station with proceedings to be aired live on radio. 2016-11-18Staff Report 2
