Standard Bank renews hockey sponsorship

Standard Bank Namibia yesterday announced their sponsorship renewal for the Junior Hockey Initiative, which is a development programme aimed at taking the sport of hockey to schools and communities.

The bank, together with the Hockey School of Excellence, launched the initiative last year and managed to reach 24 primary schools in five towns in four regions, and also succeeded in training over 53 teachers who have since become coaches at their respective schools.

Last year’s rollout covered 496 learners and for this year, Standard Bank yesterday announced that it will again come on board with a renewed sponsorship of N$500 000 and the plan for the year is to reach over 600 learners across all regions.

The renewed sponsorship of N$500 000 will be for three years and will assist the Hockey School of Excellence to achieve its set targets.

Local veteran hockey gaffer Erwin Handura, who runs the initiative at the Hockey School of Excellence, yesterday reflected on the success of the initiative, saying young Namibians and would-be hockey stars benefited big time from this noble initiative.

“I can say that I am very satisfied with how the initiative started until it ended, the schools were responsive and showing eagerness to learn the sport. The most important highlight was seeing those kids from the regions where hockey is not a popular sport showing their interest in the sport,” he said.

Looking forward to this year, Handura said that they hope to reach the remotest areas in the country and take hockey to parts where it is not known.

“We are going to cover seven regions this year, part of the seven regions include some of the furthest regions in the country where hockey is not even known as a sport. We want to take it there and develop the sport code,” he added.

Meanwhile, Standard Bank’s marketing manager Sindano Nekundi said as sponsors, they are proud of what this initiative have brought about in terms of unearthing talents as well creating the love for sport in areas where it was not known or heard off before.

“When we partnered with the Hockey School of Excellence, we set out to make dreams possible by unearthing talent and creating the love for the sport in areas where it was not known. We would like to express our delight with the progress made so far,” he added.
