2006-02-20Staff Report 2 "By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK Her surname may sound foreign, but the music she sings as a new star on the rural Namibian horizon excites audiences, leaving them clamouring for more. This I learned and experienced of Lize Kubersky the other evening during a debut music performance at an intimate home venue for invited guests in Klein Windhoek. ""I've been singing since the age of five in my hometown, but this had been the first time I have sung in front of a live audience,"" the 19-year-old lass humbly told Art/Life after her above average musical gig in the capital. She started her own band, The Musicians, a month ago with the assistance of her brother Desmond, both hailing from a musical family at Mariental. ""I see myself as a romantic and emotional singer writing and composing my own lyrics and tunes about sadness, happiness, loneliness and excitement. It thrills me to sing these songs that are inspired by American singing sensation, Jack Johnson,"" the multi-talented young lady said. Kubersky, a budding young actress, who had her national stage debut last year during the annual Youth Theatre Festival in a play titled Nowhere, is the chairperson of the country's Junior Parliament, too. ""I just love acting on stage since my high school days in a number of Afrikaans plays, only in Mariental. We never staged these works on the scale the Youth Theatre Festival does. Our play ended up second in a very competitive theatre competition,"" she recalled. Through her artistic expression in music, theatre and writing as a freelance journalist for the local newspaper at Mariental, Die Agie, Kubersky is optimistic about her entertainment career and future. ""In all these forms of expression, I normally emotionally free myself from all depression, particularly with music, which I hope will take me to Europe and other continents eventually. The band and I are in the process of cutting a demo tape for submission to the organisers of the Namibia Awards, which takes place on Saturday, May 6 at Ongwediva. If all goes well, we might get a chance to perform during the event,"" Kubersky, who is also heavily involved in youth theatre in Mariental and looking after her sick mother, said optimistically.
