Stars brush aside Touch & Go...BA wins to keep log-leaders in sight
2015-02-23Staff Report 2 WINDHOEK - Two goals apiece from veteran midfielder Klaas Blom and captain fantastic Pat-Navin Uanivi were enough to hand MTC Premiership runaway log leaders African Stars a comfortable 2-0 victory over struggling Touch & Go at the Sam Nujoma Stadium yesterday. Just featuring in his second match for Stars, Blom wasted little time in making his presence felt early in the first half when he blasted home from a rebound to put Stars ahead in an entertaining clash that was partly dampened by light rain showers. Despite Stars leading 1-0, Touch & Go kept pushing and at times had Stars defenders in a frenzy with some strong attacks from the middle although their attacks were always fruitless. Given the depth and quality of their personnel, Stars many a time enjoyed the upper hand and kept coming for Touch & Go’s jugular with a avalanche of attacks from the wings while Edy Mongmou and Robert Nganjone both showed some individual brilliance in the middle of the park. Stars extended their lead, heading towards halftime when their inspirational skipper Uanivi bulldozed his way past Touch & Go defenders to toe-poke in a scramble ball that failed to be cleared by Touch & Go. Ending the first half 2-0 in favour of Stars. The second half followed the same pattern of play, with both teams playing each other frequent visits with Touch & Go trying to salvage something from their rear attacks but Stars held firm to win the tie 2-0 and maintain their 10-point lead atop the log standing. Also in yesterday’s action at the SKW Stadium, reigning champions Black Africa cruised to an inspiring 3-0 win over struggling Julinho Sporting to keep table-toppers African Stars in touching distance with a gap of 10-points separating the two rivals. Still at the SKW Stadium, Tigers beat coastal outfit Eleven Arrows by 2-1 to dust themselves off from a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat at the hands of equally determined Blue Waters on Saturday at the same venue. In yesterday’s action at the Unam Stadium, Unam made full use of home ground advantage when they beat United Stars by 3-2 to bring a new lease of life to their league campaign, while Rebels woes continued when they lost 1-0 to Blue Waters. In Saturday’s matches, Black Africa defeated a stubborn United Stars outfit 3-2 in a closely contested match at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, while African Stars also recorded a 2-0 victory over Benfica at the same venue earlier on the day. Title chasers Tigers suffered a shocking defeat when they fell prey to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of coastal giants Blue Waters at the SKW Stadium, while Unam played to a 1-all stalemate against Julinho Sporting at the Unman Stadium. Tura Magic defeated Touch & Go 3-0 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, with Citizens playing to a disappointing 1-all draw against Mighty Gunners at the SKW Stadium.
