Students to Commemorate 1988 National Boycott
2008-06-13Staff Report 2 " By John Ekongo WINDHOEK This year marks the 20th anniversary of the national student boycott of June 1988 and the Namibia National Students Organisation (Nanso) established a committee in April to oversee preparations to commemorate the event. The student body will hold a commemorative event starting this morning at the Katutura Youth Complex. The commemoration is intended to celebrate the contribution made by the Namibian students to the liberation struggle and similarly to discuss the role of the youth and students in an independent Namibia. Founding Father and former Head of State, Dr Sam Nujoma, will address the students at this year's event. The event will be preceded by a march from the Immanuel Shifidi High School. Shifidi was one of the iconic figures in the student uprising during the late 1980s. A candlelight vigil will also be held in his honour. ""The overall objective of this activity is to undertake a year-long commemoration of the students' struggle as well as the revival of Nanso. This, we believe, will in the long run contribute to Nanso's sustainability,"" said Nanso President, Neville Andre. " 2008-06-13Staff Report 2
