Super club tennis, but little female support
2013-10-22Staff Report 2 WINDHOEK - The annual Central Tennis Club (CTC) Championship recently held at the club’s Olympia tennis courts saw club members playing some exciting tennis. Sadly there was little female support for the tournament. The men’s section was divided into sections A and B. The A section featured mainly first league standard players and the B Section consisted mostly of the club’s social players, who often play second league tennis. The B Section was by far the most supported with 12 entries. The A section had six entries making it a total of 18 adults competing in both categories. In both categories, intense competition amongst the players who regularly play social tennis was the order of the day. This year’s tournament was boosted by the inclusion of The Tennis Academy members who now use the CTC tennis club for their coaching programme. Sadly, there was no ladies section for this year’s tournament due to insufficient entries. The lack of women members also affected the mixed doubles section, which was also not played. After intense competition on Friday and Saturday, Nqobilizwe Moyo won the men’s A section. Moyo won the final by default after his opponent in the final; Kallie Heese was injured in the tough semi-final against MInichel Alemu. Moyo beat Adriaan Coetzee and S.P. Van Wyk to reach the final. The Men’s B Section was won by top-seed Samson Kaulinge who beat Robert Riethmueller. Riethmueller caused several upsets on his way to the final, beating Harald Geier and Andreas Brueckner. Meanwhile, Kaulinge defeated Lucky Gawanab and David Ipinge on his way to the final. In the men’s A Section doubles, Nqobilizwe Moyo teamed up with Ndumiso Moyo to beat the veteran team of Andreas Brueckner and Mkhululi Khupe in the final. The Moyo’s won the doubles 6:3: 6:4. The men’s doubles were enjoyed by all participants because of the innovative tournament format, which saw an A section player teaming up with a B section player to form a doubles team. This balanced out the teams and resulted in great competition amongst the teams. Moyo and Moyo beat the Terence Thuys and Adriaan Coetzee combination 6:2; 6:4 in the semi-finals. To foster the tennis club juniors’ interest in club events, this year’s club championships featured for the first time in club history a maiden junior section. It consisted of eight juniors who competed in a round robin format. The junior section featured boys and girls playing in one section. Renaldo Uirab won the junior section. The two days of intense tennis competition ended with a prize-giving ceremony and a braai at the clubhouse.
