2008-07-10Staff Report 2 By Kuvee Kangueehi Windhoek The first step towards concluding the protracted Omuthiya Local Authority elections commenced yesterday at Omuthiya as supplementary registration started yesterday morning. The registration is designed to afford an opportunity to those residents who turned 18 years since the general voters' registration conducted at Omuthiya from February 4 to 8, 2008 to vote. The acting director of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Moses Ndjarakana, who is at Omuthiya described the process as peaceful and said everything is going according to plan. He noted that the supplementary registration has been slow and said this could be attributed to the fact that most of the people at the new town registered already. Ndjarakana said everybody who meets the statutory requirements could register, including Magnus Nangombe who was disqualified for registering after the closing date in February. Nangombe, one of the RDP's seven candidates for the election of the first Town Council of Omuthiya was removed after Swapo objected to his name on the list. The ruling party claimed he had missed the deadline for registration and was smuggled onto the voters' roll after supplementary registration. Swapo objected to Nangombe's name on the list together with 11 others, while the RDP (Rally for Democracy and Progress) pointed out that 54 names of people who did not live in the constituency were on the roll.
