Swakop to service 1 300 plots

WALVIS BAY – The Swakopmund municipality has awarded eight portions of land to eleven developers with the aim to service 1 300 plots at the town.

The initiative is geared towards expediting the delivery of serviced land and housing at affordable prices to the local community.
The partnership with the developers will also see that services are installed on the land provided by the council and 513 of those erven will be returned to council.

Erongo governor Neville Andre during the ground-breaking ceremony of the project on Friday highlighted the importance of such a public-private partnership as it plays an integral role in developing the country, especially when it comes to the provision of housing.
“It is evident that this project does not only cater to those who need homes, but it will also create much-needed employment in our community,” Andre explained.

He said this will all add up in contributing towards the stimulation and growth of the local and regional economy.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Swakopmund mayor Louisa Kavita said housing development is not only about erven, roads and utilities infrastructure, but also about planning for the people that occupy the area.

“Successful, efficient communities are not built overnight and do not happen by chance. They are the result of a clear vision and careful planning. Therefore, as council, we strive to be inclusive in our planning for the development of our community,” she said.
Kavita said the ground-breaking ceremony of the project marks yet another milestone for council.

“During the year 2018, the then council approved and allocated unserviced land for development to eight private developers to address the increasing need for housing. The eight private developers will ensure the delivery of serviced land and affordable housing to the residents of Swakopmund. Upon completion of this project, a total amount of 1 300 residential erven will be developed and an amount of 513 erven will be returned to council,” she said.
