Swapo Defector in Change of Heart
"By John Ekongo WINDHOEK Like the biblical prodigal son, former president of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Namibia, Kadiva Nghipondoka, has rejoined the Swapo Party after defecting to the opposition Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) five months ago. At a press briefing held at Swapo Party headquarters yesterday, Nghipondoka said she had a brief association with the RDP, a journey she described as most unfortunate. The 24-year-old apologised to all Swapo Party structures adding, ""My association with the RDP can be reduced to a premature decision,"" adding that she was not coerced to return to Swapo and that she has not been promised any position whatsoever. She urged all young people in Namibia to rally behind the party that liberated them. ""Swapo has the history and the heritage that brought us here, we know of its history and its struggles and as young people that heritage is what should carry us forward,"" she said. According to the once prodigal daughter, Namibian youths should at all times be on alert and vigilant towards promises that are made by emerging political parties without a tangible and fundamental policy ideology or agenda. She added such ideologies could ultimately lead Namibians away from national objectives that are pertinent to the acceleration of the country's economic development. ""As young people, we must identify ourselves with our true history, cherish and take cognizance of the importance of our past as it enables us to understand where we came from and where we are going,"" she stressed. She urged youths to respect national leaders adding that they are the backbone to the peace and stability enjoyed by many today. Economic emancipation of Namibia lies in the hands of the country's young people. ""I aspire to see the students becoming catalysts that should be used as a vibrant vehicle in the struggle for the total emancipation for the total economic emancipation,"" she said. Nghipondoka did not serve in any position in the RDP. "
