Swapo elders endorse incumbents Shanyengana, Masule

The Swapo Party Elders Council’s central committee on Sunday endorsed incumbents Mukwaita Shanyengana and Marry Masule as sole candidates for the secretary and deputy secretary positions during the upcoming congress, slated for 28-31 July.

The congress will be held at Ongwediva in the Oshana region.

“The SPEC CC has endorsed the NEC recommendations with no additional candidates,” Shanyengana confirmed in a statement yesterday..

According to him, the meeting was opened by deputy minister Becky Ndjoze-Ojo. It also discussed concerns of nation-building, and any conclusions reached will be implemented as soon as possible by the necessary offices.

“The SPEC would like to prove the unity within members of the SPEC, and call on all Swapo members to unite and fight for a common goal, which includes peace and stability, economic emancipation, tackling social challenges and all issues of national concern,” he added.

Shanyengana became SPYL secretary in 2014 when he and Masule were elected at an extraordinary congress held in Swakopmund. He is the elders council’s fourth secretary. He was preceded by the late Fredrick Matongo, who took over the position from Kanana Hishoono, who had held the position since 1992. Swapo stalwart Simon Mzee Kaukungwa is the founding secretary of the elders council.
