Swapo elders want municipal discounts for pensioners
WINDHOEK – The Swapo Party Elders Council (SPEC) has called on the new government to direct all local authorities to offer at least a 25 percent discount on water and electricity bills to pensioners. Speaking during a press briefing late last week, SPEC Secretary Mukwaita Shanyengana also urged government to additionally construct decent old age homes in all major settlements in the country. “I congratulate the new President and his Cabinet for putting mechanisms in place for the implementation of some of the SPEC’s 2012 congress resolutions to increase the old age pension to N$1 000 per month and for creating new ministries. I believe that these new ministries, Poverty Reduction, Urban and Rural Development, will alleviate our plight,” Shanyengana said. Introducing four women parliamentarians from the ranks of SPEC, Shanyengana said last year SPEC campaigned vigorously for its members to get to parliament.
