Swapo suspends independent candidate member in Kunene
Khorixas The Kunene regional executive committee of Swapo Party last Friday suspended Uauadja Koos Mazenge after he registered as an independent candidate for the upcoming regional and local elections. Julius Kautjova, secretary for information and mobilization for Swapo, said: “This former comrade went and registered as an independent candidate while he as a Swapo member was supposed to support the chosen candidate.” “In Swapo Party we have rules and obligations to follow and if one disobeys then a suspension will be the obvious course, ” he added. According to Kautjova, Mazenge campaigned in the Swapo colours and confused the electorate that Swapo has filed two candidates for the Outjo constituency. “If you are a Swapo member and you register as an independent then you don’t deserve to be a member anymore since you are against the candidate chosen during the primaries,” Kautjova said. In case Mazenge wants to come back, Kautjova advised that like any new member Mazenge must apply for membership and the ruling party will make a decision. On campaigning in the Kunene Region which has been an opposition stronghold since independence, Kautjova, who himself is a candidate for the Sesfontien regional elections, said that his party has already started with house-to-house campaigns as well as public meetings since last Saturday. Peter Ilonga addressed a public meeting in Kamanjab while MP Bernadette Jagger and Kunene Regional Governor Angelika Muharukua campaigned at Otjikavera village in the Sesfontien constituency. This coming Friday, Charles Namoloh (safety and security minister) will address a meeting in Opuwo’s Katutura location, while on Saturday Obed Kandjoze (mines and energy minister) will address a meeting at Otjikondavirongo in Sesfontien constituency. The same Saturday, Namoloh and Muharukua will campaign in Ovinjange in Epupa constituency and on Sunday Namoloh will campaign in Otjozongombe in Opuwo rural. Petrina Haingura, secretary for Swapo women’s league, also addressed Kamanjab women last Sunday while this coming Saturday Agnes Tjongarero will lead a public rally at Kainatsteb near Fransfontein. “Swapo will give President Geingob a Christmas present as we will win Kunene Region for the first time. President Geingob will be the first Namibian sitting head of state to have total control over the country as Kunene will come under his control too,” enthused a confident Kautjova.
