Swapo women discuss important matters of gender
OMUNDAUNGILO – Various issues affecting Namibian women were the main points of discussion at a regional  seminar and fundraising event of the Swapo Party Women’s Council (SPWC) in Ohangwena Region. The two-day gathering at Omundaungilo focussed on family issues, 50/50 gender equality in Swapo party leadership and getting ready for next year’s elections. Deputy secretary of the SPWC Eunice Iipinge said the purpose of the women’s seminar was to discuss how to empower women economically, how to take care of children as well as the entire family. Women also emphasised to one another that mothers are the central pillar in every family and they have the major responsibility of keeping families together and productive. Delegates were briefed on how as women they can satisfactorily attend to the needs of their family members and also look after their bodies spiritually and physically, taking care of themselves and their families, and on how to work and be educated as well as get appropriate counselling. “The seminar helped to explain more on the 50/50 gender representation in Swapo leadership,” Iipinge noted. She further alluded to the fact that delegates used the opportunity to discuss violence against women and children and other vulnerable members of Namibian society. She added that violence “is not the right thing” because all human beings are created equal hence the campaign against domestic violence. Next year in March, the SPWC plans to have a national interactive seminar at Epembe, where issues affecting Namibian women will again come under the spotlight. Iipinge said the participants came from Omusati, Ohangwena, Kavango, Zambezi, Oshana, Oshikoto and Khomas regions.   By Loide Jason
