Eight swept away by raging river
Windhoek  - On Saturday at 21h30 at Otjivize village in the Okangwati area a driver of a Toyota pickup carrying 13 passengers allegedly attempted to cross a river when the vehicle capsized and was swept away. Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi, the head of police media relations, informed the media at the weekly crime briefing yesterday that six of the passengers managed to escape but seven passengers and the driver disappeared in the water. A police search was underway and yesterday morning the body of a nine-month toddler was recovered, Shikwambi said. In a separate incident, a 41-year-old man was arrested for rape and will appear in court on April 25. He allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl between 2014 and last year at Chotto location. The girl who is pregnant informed her parents and they alerted the police. On Friday evening at Okoutjete village, an 80-year-old woman died in her hut after it caught fire. The body had not yet been identified. On Saturday at M’pacha Military Base, on the outskirts of Katima Mulilo, an off-duty soldier allegedly went to the duty post where he took an AK-47 rifle and shot himself. It was reported that Rinald Rimaro Goagoseb, 27, previously attempted to cut his wrists with a broken bottle. The next of kin have been informed. He did not leave a suicide note.
