2006-07-28Staff Report 2 "By Francis Tsawayo WINDHOEK Residents of Kalkrand had to do without water for 24 hours from Wednesday until yesterday, when the supply was eventually restored although residents complained of lower water pressure. The Secretary of the Village Council Ludwig Denk said the water cut resulted from a major burst on the pipeline that supplies the tiny settlement. ""NamWater employees work-ed all night to resume the service,"" he said. According to Magrita Van Wyk of Kalkrand Service Station, officials from the council went round notifying people to store water in containers as the supplies were going to be cut off for two days. But to her dismay, the notification had come late because the water supply had already been cut off. Van Wyk revealed that the officials had made their rounds between 10 am and 11 am but taps had long run dry and the two-day warning worsened the situation. ""There was nothing coming from the taps. People had to go and fetch water from the railway station,"" complained her. ""A lot of people could be seen from a distance carrying buckets and water containers heading for the station. The queue was long,"" she added. ""It was only this morning around the same time the council members came that water returned today,"" van Wyk said. Efforts to get technical information on what transpired were fruitless as all the officials responsible were out assessing progress on the repairs.
