Technical Fault Causes Power Outage
"By John Ekongo WINDHOEK A power outage in most parts of the capital yesterday morning sent fears of load-shedding among residents. The fears were, however, short-lived as the power was restored within the hour. The power outage was experienced in Khomasdal, Pionierspark, Goreangab and parts of Katutura. Some residents New Era spoke to said the power outage occurred around 10h30 and was restored by 11h55. Upon enquiry, a City of Windhoek official at the emergency command centre revealed that it was not the municipality's doing, but rather a NamPower problem. Technicians from the national control centre at NamPower confirmed the outage, attributing it to a minor technical glitch at the coal-operated Van Eck Power Station in the northern industrial area. ""It was just a technical error at the power station, it was not any form of load-shedding,"" said the technician. The nature of the problem could not be confirmed as technicians were still at work by yesterday afternoon. Ever since the announcement of the looming electricity crisis, the national power utility has warned the public to prepare for load-shedding. However, NamPower has assured consumers that it will announce any plans of load-shedding in time in order to minimise inconvenience and thus cause minimal disruptions. "
