Teen kills grandfather in freak accident
Ongwediva The police in Omusati are investigating a case of culpable homicide and driving without a driver’s licence after a teenager allegedly ran over his grandfather at their home on Wednesday afternoon. The incident took place at the village of Okaloko in Okahao Constituency. The grandfather was rushed to Okahao District Hospital, but he was declared dead upon arrival. It is alleged the 17-year-old boy was reversing the vehicle when he accidentally struck his 89-year-old grandfather who was walking behind the vehicle. “The driver was reversing the vehicle from home and accidentally bumped his grandfather who was walking behind the motor vehicle at the time of the accident,” said Warrant Officer Lineekela Shikongo of the police public relations office in Omusati Region. According to Shikongo, a silver Toyota Hilux 2.7 was involved in the accident. He said the incident occurred at the house where the deceased and the victim both resided. The deceased was identified as Shilongo David. His next of kin have been informed. According to Shikongo, there were no arrests made, as investigations into the matter were still ongoing. “The police have opened a case and the police are still investigating the matter. Once the investigations are done the docket will be sent to the prosecutor general’s office to pronounce whether to prosecute, or not to prosecute, the suspect,” said Shikongo. Meanwhile, Shikongo cautioned drivers to be cautious when driving and to use their mirrors at all times. He further cautioned unlicensed drivers to refrain from driving to avoid similar accidents.
