‘The Hitman’ to star in independence jubilee boxing bonanza
WINDHOEK - Former world champion and incumbent WBO International Champion, Paulus “The Hitman” Moses will be the centre of attraction at this year’s independence boxing bonanza that will coincide with Namibia’s 25th independence anniversary celebrations. Moses boasts an impeccable record of 37 fights, 35 wins and two defeats and remains one of the continent’s most prolific sporting heroes, and a product Namibians can be proud of. Moses will square off against the undefeated hard-hitting Paraguayan, Carlos Portillo, as the latter put his WBO International Lightweight title at stake against the equally dangerous Namibian, the most decorated pugilist in Namibian boxing. Rated No.3 in world rankings, Moses is still regarded as a world-class fighter, hence his rating among the best in his division and on FightNews, as a pound for pound fighter. Blessed with quick hands coupled with a great punch, the Namibian has achieved what very few athletes can only dream of, as he stayed on top of his game to be rated among the top 10 in the world over the past 12 years. “This is an incredible achievement and we need to celebrate this,” said his handler Nestor Tobias, promoter of the MTC Nestor Sunshine Boxing & Fitness Academy. “If we had a Hall of Fame in Namibia, Hitman’s name would definitely be among the first to be engraved on the wall,” adds Tobias. “Featuring Moses in the main bout is our way of celebrating his success, perseverance, and trials and tribulations that he has endured during his entire career and more importantly his ability to inspire those that will follow in his footsteps.” The exciting fight card also features the cream of the crop of local professional boxers led by Japhet Uutoni, who faces Sibusiso Twani from South Africa, while Tyson Ushona makes his long-awaited return to the ring against Tshepo Mandawe (SA). Julius Indongo squares off against Herbert Nkabiti from Botswana with Prince Naidjala up against Robert Kachiza from Malawi. Adding more spice to the mouth-watering menu will be the Martin Haikali/Nkosinathi Ntsan Gase (SA) bout. Currently rated No. 4 in the world, the in-form Beastmaster Meroro takes on South African challenger Patrick Mokala. Walter Kautondokwa will be out to show his punching power against Malawian opponent Charles Masanjo. In an all-Namibian affair, Immanuel Mungandjela will face tough Tommy Hango. “Since this will be our independence celebrations, we have decided not to charge normal entrance fees, and therefore general tickets that usually sell for N$200 will now sell for N$30 while VIP tickets that are usually on purchase for a N$1 000 will go for N$200”. Security will be tight as usual and the bouts will be staged at the Ramatex Hall outside Katutura, the organisers have said. Tickets are on sale at Computicket outlets countrywide. The fight takes place on March 20, 2015.
