Trial-awaiting suspects escape from Bethanie police cells
2016-03-08Staff Report 2 "Windhoek The police in Bethanie, //Karas Region, have appealed to members of the public to assist in tracing the whereabouts of trial awaiting prisoners who escaped from the Bethanie Police holding cells a week ago on Saturday. Last week Inspector Slogan Matheus from the police public relations division said the escape occurred between 18h00 and 21h00. The two trial awaiting suspects allegedly cut through the burglar bars, jumped over a wall and escaped. The two are Klaas Homgob, 53, who was arrested on a charge of rape and robbery, and Elvis Plaatjie, 27, who was arrested on a charge of murder and robbery. Anybody with information on the whereabouts of the suspects is urged to contact the station commander at Bethanie police station or the nearest police station. The manhunt meanwhile continues for three trial-awaiting prisoners who escaped last November from the Windhoek Correctional Facility, in one of the most spectacular cases of jailbreak in Namibian history. The three apparently received assistance from police officers, who were later brough before court and denied bail. The escape happened on November 26 last year, the same day prison officers detained a 27-year-old woman with seven cell phones and chargers hidden in a suitcase, which she wanted to smuggle into the facility. Three people - later identified as police officers - arrived at Windhoek Correctional Facility at around 11h00 and requested to be handed three trial-awaiting inmates to be charged for new cases at Rundu, where they were apparently based. The inmates include Pieter Itana, who was being detained for theft, and Marius Thomas, 28, who in June last year was found guilty in the High Court of six crimes, including murder, rape, kidnapping and robbery. Thomas was charged with counts of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, alternatively unlawful use of property, in connection with the events surrounding the death of his work colleague, Likius Ngesheya, 44, at Farm Kaalvlakte in the Bethanie District during the night of February 25 to 26, 2008. Thomas was also accused of having raped a woman at a farm close to Keetmanshoop and robbing, kidnapping and indecently assaulting the same woman, on August 3, 2009. The third inmate, Mervin Raymond Hanse also faces charges of murder. " 2016-03-08Staff Report 2
