2016-06-16Staff Report 2 Tsumeb The copper town of Tsumeb staged a successful Mini Basketball Jamboree under the stewardship of sports officer Francina Shilongo-Amakali. A total of 90 participants took part in the one-day event that included boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 13 from all primary schools in the maize triangle of Tsumeb, Otavi and Grootfontein. The youngsters demonstrated their skills on the basic fundamentals in basketball by doing some dribbling, passing, shooting, crossovers and lay-ups. The tourney was sponsored by Alpha Clinic. Dr Roman Nderecha sponsored medals, trophies and refreshments for participants. Overall results of the tourney were as follows: Boys 1 Tsumeb English Medium team 2 Grootfontein 3 Kuvukiland Primary School Girls 1 St Francis Primary School 2 Nomtsoub Primary School 3 Tsumeb English Primary School. MVPs of the tourney received trophies for showing leadership skills and team work, and for their high scores. Award recipients were Amoreen and Joshua. Individual trophies were also up for grabs for basketball babies – a boy and a girl aged 7 years who demonstrated high skills. “As the designated sport officer, the main reason focussing on this Mini Basketball Jamboree, I notice a way in striving for a continuous and harmonious growth of basketball. I would therefore like to see the mini basketball program implemented and supported in as many schools and local communities as possible,” said Amakali. Furthermore, Amakali strongly believes that basketball can be a great educational opportunity for the athletes – providing personal and social development for youth. “Among other things, basketball serves to develop values that will help make our future adults better citizens, thereby stimulating a peaceful and respectful co-existence of our people. I’m also proud to announce that the TGBA kicks off with its league activities next month in Tsumeb, Grootfontein and Rietfontein,” she concluded. 2016-06-16Staff Report 2
