2015-07-06Staff Report 2 Windhoek A group of Unam final year law students under the Legal Aid Clinic, which is part of the Faculty of Law at the University of Namibia, last week Friday held a fun day for the children of Dagbreek in Klein Windhoek. Dagbreek is a school for learners who are intellectually impaired and children with Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, pervasive developmental disorders including autistic spectrum disorder, Asperger’s syndrome, Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrate disorders. The clinic not only provides legal aid services but through various means undertakes social projects to help various sectors of the society. Priscilla Nande, one of the students, stated that the main reason for their involvement is to highlight the needs of the school so as to ensure better facilities for children and to raise awareness for the school. “I really feel that it is something close to the heart, coming together as a community to embrace ourselves and the appreciation for helping,” said Nande Wana Chinsembu, another student, said: “I think it’s really important to help those who are living with certain problems that we aren’t. I love children – there is always something that we can do and always something we can change.” “I have been working at this school for six and half years and now we have 120 learners. We do this fun racing every year to keep them fit so they can improve in their academic skills. I love my work, I laugh with the kids unconditionally and they love us for what we are, they enrich us along the way,” said Sonia Theron a teacher at the school. 2015-07-06Staff Report 2
