Unam praised for cultivating research culture
Rundu Kavango East Governor Samuel Mbambo says Namibia cannot advocate development without research and showered praise on the University of Namibia (Unam) for advancing research in the country. “As you celebrate your Research and Innovation day, allow me to call upon you to turn your research and innovation initiatives to resolve teething regional Kavango socio-economic problems, especially poverty,” Mbambo said at the Research and Innovation Day held at Unam’s Rundu Campus on Friday. “Your Research and Innovation day is particularly significant as Namibia embarks on the implementation of the National Programme on Research, Science, Technology and Innovation (2014/15 to 2016/17), which was approved by Cabinet and launched during the first quarter of 2015,” he said. Attending the event were Grade 11 learners from various schools, who came to experience the innovation and career exposition on the day. “It is very encouraging to note how at the campus level you endeavour to translate knowledge into entrepreneurial opportunities, as will be showcased by your students,” Mbambo said. This year’s theme is ‘Education, Research and Innovation for Sustainable Development - 2015 and Beyond’. Mbambo said it is pleasing to note the university’s unflinching commitment to knowledge creation through research, because this is the trend the whole world is following: “Research to development is like accounting to finance. It’s like law to lawyers. It is medicine to doctors.” Mbambo further said the current state of research within the country can be improved through the development of sustainable national funding structures and mechanisms, by encouraging and supporting the presentation of research papers at regional and international conferences, by reporting on crucial research findings in appropriate media, keeping an updated research database and forming research linkages and networks nationally and within the region.
