Unam rugby club donates to Dagbreek School

The University of Namibia (Unam) rugby club, along with its management team, visited the Dagbreek Special School in the capital for a thoughtful donation over the weekend.

The team has for the past few weeks been collecting funds through its various fundraising campaigns and at the weekend, managed to buy and donate an assortment of toiletries for the Dagbreek Special School pupils. The donation included sanitary pads, lotions, soaps, tissues, deodorant sprays and roll on, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and was handed over directly to the boarding supervisor Charmaine Nel, who oversees the school and children’s facilities.

Nel said it was a heart-warming experience to receive the items from Unam rugby club, saying she could see a sense of relief on the faces of the children.

Unam player Berry Gande said it has been the club’s priority to give back to the community in any way possible.

“It is something we undertook in 2019, but 2020 and 2021 were a little difficult for us because of Covid-19 as sport was not on the radar, and that slowed down our intentions,” he noted.

Dagbreek, with a population of 37 learners, is one of only two special government schools in Namibia that serve to educate learners who are intellectually impaired.

The club has made a remarkable mark in 2019, when they engaged with the School of the Hearing and Virtually Impaired in Khomasdal.

“It is one victory we celebrate till today, and the current donation to Dagbreek is another one we are definitely happy to have accomplished,” added Gande.

Speaking on behalf of the team, he said they are delighted and proud of themselves, adding that such donations help them as a team to build in terms of unity, responsibility and character.
