Uncle sets nephew’s car on fire, commits suicide
2016-10-28Staff Report 2 Okahao A 25-year-old man from Etunda in Okahao Constituency of Omusati Region is reeling in shock after his car was reportedly stolen by his uncle, who then set it on fire before shooting himself in the head with a pistol, causing him to die on the spot. The incident happened on Thursday morning in the Etunda area of Okahao. The deceased apparently drove the car from Arandis in the Erongo Region to Ongozi Village in Okahao Constituency, where he set it on fire before taking his own life. He was found dead four kilometers from where he hadleft the vehicle. The nephew, who requested that his name not be mentioned, said his 40-year-old uncle, David Shigwedha Nuuta, had broken down the door to the house his nephew rented in Arandis while the latter was at work and stole his car keys. He noticed upon his return home from work that his car was not in the garage and that the house was locked. “The main entrance was locked with a new padlock that I don’t have a key for. I then used another door that I have a key for. My room was broken into and nothing was taken, except the car keys,” said the shocked nephew. He said he tried to reach Nuuta on his mobile phone, but his uncle was not reachable. He then went to the police to report the matter. “The police advised me to just give the report and wait for the next day, saying he might return it. And if not, then I will open a case,” he added. He said at around 22h23 on Wednesday night, Nuuta called him, apologising profusely and asking for forgiveness, saying he is going to set the car on fire. “He just called me, greeted me and said: ‘I’m sorry, I’m going to set your car on fire now and I will die with my sin,” he recalled sadly. He said they had been living together for about two years and never had any disputes. Nevertheless, lately his uncle had called his mother to complain that her son is misbehaving and has stopped cooking and doing laundry for him. However, the nephew said those were petty issues that under normal circumstances no human would take so seriously as to commit suicide over. Omusati regional police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lineekela Shikongo confirmed the incident, saying that the white Toyota, with registration number N102-943W was found burning along the road on outskirts of Okahao. He said the police were later informed that there was a man found dead about four kilometres from the burned car. “A Baikal Makarov 9mm pistol with serial number Xpm6415, licensed under the deceased’s name, was discovered. The investigation will continue,” he said. Shikongo confirmed that the victim’s next of kin have been informed and that no criminal case has been opened in connection with the apparent suicide. 2016-10-28Staff Report 2
