Understanding the importance of peaceful elections

From the onset, it is imperative to mention that peace is essential for our country as it provides hope for a better future, particularly for the youth of our society, who are the true ambassadors of the future.
As we embark on the regional and local council authority elections on 25 November 2020, it is vital to know and understand that elections are an important aspect of every society.

Equally important, is the fact that citizens cannot overlook the importance of incorporating peace and stability in their mindsets during the election process.
History has taught us that those elections that are fuelled by violence, do not achieve the desired democratic outcome we all strive towards in terms of creating opportunities and making a positive impact in the way we do things.

Violence subsequently affects the whole system and consequently the livelihood of innocent citizens.
Peace ensures that voters are allowed to exercise their constitutional and democratic rights to cast votes and elect their candidates of choice without fear or intimidation. Free and fair elections can only be achieved when peace is apparent.
Peace helps us to ensure that the entire election process runs smoothly.
The only way to be certain of a smooth and fair election process is to maintain law and order, peace, safety and security at election polls.

We achieve this by following the required procedures and protocols as stipulated and guided by Namibian law.
The Namibian Police Force will ensure that peace prevails at all polling stations where elections are conducted.

However, Namibians are reminded to be aware of Article 21 (1) d of the Namibian Constitution that guarantees the right to assemble peacefully.
Without weapons, such freedoms should be exercised in such a way that it does not infringe on the right of other citizens.
We should remind ourselves that peace is essential, as it is through peace and stability that the election process can both begin and end successfully.

Let us obey the rule of law before, during and after elections.

CAUTION: Stay alert; make the right decisions and be a law-abiding citizen.
