Walvis Bay to host official May Day celebration
2015-03-30Staff Report 2 WINDHOEK – The National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) is to host this year’s official celebration of May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, on May 1, at the Kuisebmond Stadium in Walvis Bay. President Hage Geingob is expected to be the keynote speaker. The celebration will be held under the theme, “Strengthen Industry for Workers Prosperity”. NUNW secretary general Job Muniaro told New Era yesterday that it was decided at a meeting on Saturday that the federation would host this year’s official celebration at the coastal town. “Although we are still to consult the president’s office we are expecting President Hage Geingob to be our keynote speaker,” said Muniaro. May Day is a celebration of the International Labour Movement and May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries. It will be the second time since independence that Walvis Bay hosts the workers’ day celebration. Muniaro said the meeting also decided to host the NUNW’s sixth ordinary congress in Walvis Bay on April 28 to 30. The congress is to elect a new president, deputy president, secretary general and deputy secretary general who will all serve for the next five years. Although the Saturday meeting was to elect members who will compete for the top four positions at the congress, yesterday Muniaro refused to divulge who was elected to compete, saying a press conference would be held today to reveal details of the meeting. “Wait until tomorrow, we will have a press conference to brief the media on the Saturday meeting,” said Muniaro. Last week NUNW acting president Connie Pandeni made a U-turn after officially notifying she would only be involved in the federation’s activities until the next congress next month, after which she would quit. Pandeni had notified all relevant structures of the NUNW that she would retire from active unionism, but last week she denied having authored such letter,which is in New Era’s possession. 2015-03-30Staff Report 2
