Walvis petitions against bail for murder suspects
2016-06-22Staff Report 2 Walvis Bay About 50 residents of Walvis Bay yesterday bravely demonstrated and petitioned the local magistrate’s court against granting bail to the suspected killers of businessman Hans Jörg Möller who died on Saturday. His wife, Carol-Ann Sowden Möller, who was also viciously attacked during the armed robbery at her family home, was also among the demonstrators. Möller, 50, was shot and seriously wounded in the early hours of last Friday after he tried to defend his family against the armed gang. A brave Carol-Ann, supported by her mother, yesterday also handed over a petition with more than a thousand signatures to state prosecutor Faith Chipepera to oppose bail being granted to the suspects. Two suspects, David Tashiya and David Shekudja, yesterday arrived at court under heavy police guard for their first appearance on a charge of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery. The pair was arrested in Windhoek over the weekend during a nationwide manhunt by members of the Namibian police. They were transferred to Walvis Bay on Monday and yesterday appeared before Magistrate John Sindano. Sindano also presided over the first court appearance of Gotlieb Panduleni, the first suspect to be arrested in the matter. He was brought before court on Monday, after he was arrested over the weekend in Oshikoto Region. Residents who demonstrated yesterday at court expressed their shock and dismay towards the escalation of murders in the country, saying such evil deeds cannot go unpunished and that culprits must be kept behind bars until they are sentenced. Some of the residents told New Era that Walvis Bay is not safe anymore. “Even your own house can be the place of death these days. Nobody has the right to take another person’s life. However we are thankful to the Namibian police for arresting the suspects. Now we just want justice for our brother.” 2016-06-22Staff Report 2
