Welwitschias still hunting first Currie Cup win
2016-05-20Staff Report 2 Windhoek Lying rock bottom on the 2016 Currie Cup log table still without a victory to date, Namibia’s senior rugby team, the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias, will this weekend be expected to pull out all stops to record their first Currie Cup victory. The national senior rugby team will lock horns with South African outfit the Leopards for their seventh match of this year’s Currie Cup tournament tomorrow at Olen Park in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Welwitschias have endured a harsh journey in this year’s Currie Cup, losing all six of their fixtures against EP Kings, Sharks, Golden Lions, Free State Cheetahs, Pumas and Griquas - meaning tomorrow’s match against the Leopards will be the opportunity for the Namibian boys to show some character and hopefully bag their first win. Still winless, Namibia currently sits bottom of the log standings with only one point from six defeats so far, while the Leopards are 11th on the log with 12 points from two wins and have lost three matches to date. The Currie Cup is South Africa’s premier domestic rugby union competition, played each winter and spring, featuring teams representing either entire provinces or substantial regions within provinces. Steeped in history and tradition, the Currie Cup dates back to 1891. The tournament is also regarded as the cornerstone of South Africa’s rugby heritage and the coveted gold trophy remains the most prestigious prize in South African domestic rugby. Welwitschias starting lineup is as follows: Casper Viviers, Gerhard Lötter, AJ de Klerk, Muniovita Kasiringua, Denzil van Wyk, Rohan Kitshoff (captain), Joe Hermann, Leneve Damens, JC Winkler, Shawn Kaizemi, Phillip Nashikako, Francois Wiese, JC Greyling, Russell van Wyk and Johann Tromp.
