Windhoek July Promises Thrills
By Carlos Kambaekwa WINDHOEK It's that time of the year again! - the Windhoek Turf Club in conjunction with Distell Namibia is to host the biggest event in equestrian sport on Namibian shores - the 2008 Windhoek July Handicap, this Saturday. Distill Namibia will be sponsoring the event for the fourth consecutive year with a sizeable amount of N$25 000. The competition comprises of eight different races of which four will be over a distance of 1000 meters for the sprinters and the pre-race favou-rites in this division are Preston, Iris Assembly and Take the Heat, a newcomer on the local scene owned by the stable of the Christians, Freygang and Diergaardt syndicate. The main race of the day is without doubt the Windhoek July Handicap stretching over a distance of 1600 meters with defending champion Pilor Pistal of Emil van Wyk a notable absentee this time around - leaving the competition quite open for the rest of the field. Iris Assembly of Daniel Beukes will have to pull out all stops following his somewhat below par showing in the last competitive race in Rehoboth, a few weeks ago, where the veteran horse was made to play second fiddle to the young and energetic Preston of Tyron Plaatjies. However, history has proven otherwise with the established horses always showing their true colours when the situation demands and the trio of Preston, Time Bomb and Fastman can expect some tough challenge from the likes of Kings Lodge, Colour Me Indingo and Iris Assembly. The event will commence at eleven o'clock in the morning and equestrian sports enthusiasts are urged to come early and witness what the organizers consider to be the best ever horse racing event on Namibian soil.
