WALVIS BAY - A woman, who is accused of allegedly fleeing from a fatal accident, made her first appearance on a charge of culpable homicide on Monday in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court.

This follows her arrest on Saturday at a private hospital shortly after she received treatment for injuries she sustained during the accident.

Jeronette Benson, who does not have a driver’s licence, on Saturday around lunch time allegedly hit a 62-year-old man, left the vehicle and ran from the scene. She was granted bail of N$10 000 yesterday.

The accident happened in at the corner of Moses Garoeb and Hanna Mupetami streets.

According to Inspector Ileni Shapumba, Benson was driving a silver Volkswagen Golf, which she left on the scene.

“The victim sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Walvis Bay state hospital, where he passed on shortly thereafter,” Shapumba said.

Meanwhile, sources said that Benson arrived in a hysterical state at home before she was taken to a private hospital for treatment.

Police in the meantime managed to trace and arrest her at the hospital.

Benson appeared in the Walvis Bay court and was charged with culpable homicide, fleeing from an accident, failure to ascertain the nature of injury and damage after an accident as well as driving without a driver’s licence.
