Woman charged with attempted murder

A 22-year-old Angolan national was arrested at Ogongo for attempted murder and concealment of birth on Tuesday morning.

According to the police regional commander in Omusati, Titus Shikongo, the suspect allegedly threw her new-born baby down a pit latrine.

“It is alleged that the suspect gave birth to a baby girl and she intentionally wrapped the baby in a plastic refuse bag, and dumped the baby into the pit latrine,” Shikongo said.

Police rescued the baby after the public notified them. The baby was rescued alive and is placed under the custody of the maternity ward at Oshikuku Roman Catholic Hospital and is said to be in good health.

The suspect is also admitted at the same hospital for medical treatment.

Shikongo said the suspect has been charged but will only appear in court once her condition improves.

The suspect hails from Onanghupa village in the Cunene Province in Angola.

She was employed at a local shop at Ogongo at the time of the incident.
